These are the best wall thickness calipers I have found, spring loaded and adjustable with a brass thumbwheel, they can be used by spot measuring or reading the "air gap". These Veritas wall thickness calipers are the only ones that I use. I set about twice the wall thickness that I want and then read the "air gap" between the finished outer surface and the visible point of the calipers. The major reason for using these calipers is that they don't mark the outer surface of the vessel or bowl unlike double ended calipers which need both points to be in contact and will leave scratch marks which I can't afford to have on my pieces that will be coloured.
